When she emerged the bedroom was empty. She teamed a gossamer-fine lilac top ornamented with fine beading with the skirt that fell to mid-calf and a velvet-trimmed cardigan, brushed her hair until it fell into style and applied make-up. Time to get into role: she was the fake mistress, more interested in fashion and an ultra-feminine appearance than fishing and unlikely to dress for practicality even on a country weekend in a Scottish castle.

As she descended the winding stone staircase with care in her high heels, she caught the sound of chairs being scraped back followed by the murmur of voices receding from the hall below. Stepping down into the echoing front hall where a welcoming fire burned in the dimness but there appeared to be nobody else present, she hesitated for a moment and then a slight sound alerted her to the fact that she was not alone.
